This weekend, the vibrant Cherry Street Pier transformed into a lively hub for the We Are the Seeds festival, where the heartbeat of Indigenous culture reverberated through performances, artistry, and community spirit. Now in its sixth year, this annual event celebrates not only Indigenous dance but also the rich tapestry of Native American heritage in Philadelphia.
A Commitment to Visibility and Recognition
Founded in 2016 by two passionate Indigenous women, the We Are the Seeds of CultureTrust works tirelessly to elevate Native voices. Co-founder, Tailinh Agoyo, emphasizes, “Whenever I talk to people about Seeds, many express surprise at the presence of Native communities in Philadelphia. Our mission is to show that ‘we’re here.’” Recognizing and uplifting these voices cultivates a greater understanding and celebrates the ongoing contributions of Native peoples to Philadelphia’s dynamic culture.
Honoring History and Land
Held on Lenape land, the Cherry Street Pier serves as a poignant reminder of Philadelphia's original inhabitants. Long before the pier drew crowds for art and festivals, it was a central hub for the Lenape community, crucial for fishing, trade, and cultural practices. Agoyo reflects, “Seeds Philly reclaims space in a city that has overlooked contemporary Native peoples,” reminding attendees that Indigenous voices are not relics of the past but vibrant and thriving parts of the present.
Exciting Performances and Workshops
The festival kicked off with a warm welcome from Agoyo, followed by a Powwow grand entry that celebrated diverse dances and music. Featuring participants of all ages, including a captivating segment of Men’s Fancy Dance, the event demonstrated the unity and strength found in Indigenous cultural expressions. John Block, a member of the Bear Clan, served as emcee, enriching the experience with his insights into the traditions being showcased.
